Where would we have been without text messaging? The SMS feature has grown tremendously to a worldwide staple. Text Messaging allowed us to be direct, independent and more efficient. Whenever you are running late, you send a text message to someone to let the person know. When you are in a meeting or attending classes and there is an emergency, you will know immediately with SMS. When you want a quick yes or no answer, you ask through text.
In 1984 the SMS idea was developed by Friedhelm Hillebrand and Bernard Ghillebaert, while the earliest text message was sent from Neil Papworth in 1992. As at that particular time, handsets didn’t come with keyboards, therefore Papworth had to type the message on a PC.
Nearly all the olden days GSM mobile phone handsets did not have the capability to send text messages. The earliest SMS gateways for cell phones were network notifications, generally in form of voice mail messages.
Nokia was the earliest manufacturer of handset whose total GSM phone line supported user-sending of SMS text messages in 1993. However, it became the first manufacturer to manufacture a mobile phone with a full keyboard (Nokia 9000i Communicator) in 1997.
The initial development for SMS was slow, just like any new technology. In 1995, the average American user sent 0.4 texts each month. Little by little, phones and networks accommodated text messaging better. In 1999, texts could be substituted amid diverse networks at last, which augmented its usefulness. The standard measure of text messages sent in the U.S. by year 2000 increased to 35 a month per person.
